Uniform Advertising to Usher in a New Era in Major League Baseball

March 17, 2022

After a 99-day lockout, the MLB and MLBPA agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) on Thursday, bringing baseball back to life. As part of the new CBA, MLB will incorporate uniform advertising for the first time in league history. This will be accomplished by patches on uniforms and decals on batting helmets.

Of course, the idea of putting advertisements on player uniforms has been around for a long time in other sports. MLB is just the latest major American sports league to embrace uniform advertising. For the NBA, the procedure began in 2017, while for the NHL advertising on jerseys is set to begin in 2022. As of right now, it's not known whether or not MLB teams will have uniform sponsors in 2022 or 2023.

In light of MLB's decision, the NFL is now the only league that does not plan to include uniform advertising. However, at this point, it may be unavoidable. Even modest patches on NFL uniforms would undoubtedly bring in a lot of money for the league. This as the NBA's decision to include uniform advertising has already proven to be profitable. The uniform patch initiative generated a total worth of $225 million for the 2021-22 season, according to Boardroom, which is more than double the league's initial predictions.
